When I first heard this term I didnt quite understand it. Did it mean to stay calm? Did it mean to stop what I was doing? Was this a mental skill or a physical skill?
I put it on the back burner and didnt come back to it until I started seeing it more and more. I often saw this term used when people were overwhelmed. I finally decided to do more research.
In short, it means to get out of your head when you are stressed, overwhelmed, emotional, or have anxiety and focus on being present. If youre grounded, you practice a deep sense of mindfulness and rarely think about what ifs. Its also a deeper connection to the authentic self. Furthermore, that groundedness is associated with an experience of clarity, wholeness, and harmony.
When youre grounded, youre in complete control of your mental and emotional self, and not easily influenced by other ideas or individuals.
We focus on one sense at a time, which usually we overload our senses with multi-tasking and social media. We usually have all this information coming in and that doesnt help our anxieties.
So when we ground ourselves and focus on one sense, it is calming because we take away all incoming traffic that is running us over.
Sight- Change your environment, go for a walk, hike, or gym. Maybe that is too hard, maybe you cant get out of bed today, make a smaller goal. Go from your bed to your porch.
Smell- Aromatherapy is my favorite grounding skill to focus on the smell. Light a candle, buy some fragrant flowers. Focus on the smell, how does this smell make you feel?
Hear- Music, podcast, talking to a kind friend or family member. I use all three of these.
Taste- A healthy smoothie, or your favorite treat. Nourish your body, listen to what your body needs. Take a minute and focus on the flavors, textures, and temperature of the food.
Touch- water, sand, snow, wind, soft, warm, cold. My favorite thing is to splash my face with cold water. Take a warm bath. Or go for a walk on a windy day.
